Nearby towns:

Chester Approx distance: 10 miles

One of the all-around best towns near the wedding. Full service dining, groceries, gas stations, banks. All the civlization you will need. A few museums around town, but nothing super interesting.

For a good time go into Ayoubs downtown.

East Shore Lake Almanor/Hamilton Branch Approx distance: 12 miles
East Shore is where our family campground once was back in the day. Its fairly quiet with little in the way of services aside from a liquor store/gas station and a few businesses around the HWY36/HWY147 intersection.

Rumor has it that Dyer Mountain, the peak on the east shore, is supposed to develop into a multi-millions of dollars ski resort starting in the summer of 2006, but one can never be too sure...

Lake Almanor Approx distance: 12 miles
"Lake Almanor" covers a multitude of sin, but most places placing themselves at Lake Almanor are on "the Peninsula" -- pretty well the only place long the lake with no real locality of its own. They are more truly in the lake than a lot of other places and are home to a number of the lakes larger harbors.

Other places that might list the lake as an address are shoreside (or in the vicinity) properties, though if you are curious, it wouldn't hurt to ask how close the water is. A couple of places used to go right up to the waterline, and that was better before there were boats. Accomodations lakeside will be anywhere from pretty good to fabulous, especially now that Little Norway went quitter.

Westwood Approx distance: 15 miles
Its a long way from Westwood to pretty much anything, though its the hub of a couple roads in the area. Higher and drier than anywhere but Susanville, its got the feeling of a town that went bust long ago. While there may be charming places to stay that list "Westwood" as an address, my casual assesment would be to avoid this town.
Crescent Mills Approx distance: 23 miles
Allegedly closer than either Quincy or Susanville -- goes to show how much I know about anything but take your pick -- its mighty pretty in both directions.
Mill Creek Approx distance: 29 miles

A gorgeous valley, very pleasant. Alpen. Much like Dunsmuir-meets-Bear Valley, if you know what I mean.

Two places to stay, I'd probably chance the St. Bernards. A charming house looking place right on the prarie. A bit on the road -- might be off-putting to some, though Child's Meadows is occasionally a little "Psycho" motel looking from one year to another.

Great looking place, maybe not great staying place. If you're into great adventure and perhaps a novel find, try either, though again, the St. Bernards.

Lassen National Park Approx distance: 30 miles
A beautiful park featuring a lot of high-Sierra terrain as well as the best in volcanic action in the northern state.

Quincy Approx distance: 39 miles
A ways further down the road, but a very civilized place not unlike Murphys or perhaps a dry-mountain Arcata. Modern conveniences rub shoulders with the old lumber and gold ways. Good times, fairs to be had. A pretty safe bet, if I recall, though nary a time up there did I look at the accomodations.
Susanville Approx distance: 42 miles
They have a Black Bear Diner there, as WELL as one of the State's harder prisons. You know how Virginia City is? Susanville is kind of like that: out in the plains, middle of nowhere, eastern edge of the mountains...

There's not too many places to go that are like that in California where you can make the exchange painlessly like that. The prison is kept at a healthy distance from the town and overall its a pretty friendly place, albeit a little run-down around some of the corners.
